Household Hazardous Waste

Household Hazardous Waste (HHW) is any leftover household product that contains ingredients that are: corrosive, toxic, ignitable (flammable) or reactive. Any product that contains one or more of these ingredients should never be put into any of the curbside containers, down any drain, or thrown on the ground. To keep these items from contaminating our water, land and air, they need to be disposed of properly.

Highway 59 Landfill


Please use the main Highway 59 Landfill entrance, pull up to the scale, and tell the scale house clerk which materials you have in your vehicle.


The Highway 59 Landfill accepts these items from Merced County residents (not businesses) during regular operating hours:

  • Antifreeze (up to 5 gallons per day)
  • Batteries (household and automotive; up to 40 pounds per day)
  • Electronic Devices (including TV's, computers, printers, phones, microwaves, charging cords, etc.)
  • Fluorescent light tubes/bulbs and CFLs (up to 8 lights; lights must be delivered intact, not broken.)
  • Liquid paint (must be in the original container; up to 15 gallons per day; based on container size, not on how much is left in the can)
  • Mercury-containing thermostats
  • Used motor oil (up to 5 gallons per day) and used oil filters (up to 5 per day)

Billy Wright Landfill


Pull up to the scale, and tell the scale house clerk which materials you have in your vehicle.


The Billy Wright Landfill accepts these items from Merced County residents (not businesses) during regular operating hours:
